Fire Tragedy Prompts Update Of QLD Smoke Alarm Caravan Laws – Are You Compliant?

A fatal caravan fire in QLD, in May 2023, led to calls for a review of the state’s smoke alarm laws for caravans and moveable dwellings.

As of 1st July 2024, Queensland’s Fire Services Act 1990 now legally mandates smoke alarms in all registered caravans and motorhomes.

Photoelectric Smoke Alarm Suitable For Caravans $53.95

Fire Blanket Suitable For Caravans $30.00

Smoke Alarm Remote Control $24.95

New QLD registrations or transfers must have Australian Standard 3786:2014 compliant photoelectric smoke alarms installed, powered by a 10-year non-removable battery. By 2027, this requirement will extend to all registered caravans and motorhomes. Non-compliance results in fines of up to $774.

Caravan fires have been a recurring issue in QLD, with several tragic cases reported. NSW has legally mandated smoke alarms in all moveable dwellings since 2011.

To stay safe and avoid hefty fines, caravan owners are urged to install a ZEN photoelectric smoke alarm and fire blanket.
